If you like your fiddle music on the jazzy or bluesy side, you should love this wonderful anthology of 24 tracks cut by black musicians between 1927 & 1935. The cuts are all well-chosen by collector Marshall Wyatt, and range from fine Jug Band fare (Memphis Jug Band, Dixieland Jug Blowers) to a neat track by a Portuguese trio. There are several bluesy pieces featuring such artists as the Mississippi Shieks, Bo Chatmon, Peg Leg Howell and Joe Williams’ Washboard Blues Singers, and good fiddle performances by blues musicians better known for their guitar playing (Big Bill Broonzy and Lonnie Johnson). There’s even a cut of the white fiddle band the Georgia Yellow Hammers (featuring the wonderful black fiddler Andrew Baxter). The disc includes a superb 32-page booklet with excellent notes and fabulous rare photos. GEORGIA CRAWL, WILD COW BLUES, DOCTOR MEDICINE, KNOX COUNTY STOMP, DANCE HALL SHUFFLE, MEMPHIS STOMP, etc.
