Unlike many of this younger generation who have problems with singing, Leftwich has a rich & pleasant voice which he uses to good advantage in an unpretentious, unselfconscious way on songs like KITTY WELLS, ARE YOU GETTING THERE RABBIT and CAN YOU DANCE A TOBACCO HILL. This adds variety to a superb program, making the instrumentals stand out even more. Linda Higginbotham’s banjo-uke is an unexpected but thoroughly appropriate & effective complement to Leftwich’s wonderful fiddling. No weak cuts on this CD: I cant’ boil my favorites down to less than 7 or 8 cuts-among them the knockout FLANNERY’S DREAM. FLATWOODS, SARO, NUMBER NINE, GETTING THERE RABBIT and CAN YOU DANCE A TOBACCO HILL (a LEATHER BREECHES relative). Great stuff here—highly recommended.
