This 21-song retrospective is a fine tribute to one of the most distinctive & noted singers & entertainers in the relatively short history of Bluegrass music. Duffey, who died suddenly in 1996, left an impressive legacy of songs on which he was featured, both with the early Country Gentlemen and later the Seldom Scene. This album features only his later recordings cut for Sugar Hill between 1978 and 1996, but gives a superb idea of his talent, capturing some of his classic performances like LONG BLACK VEIL, HICKORY WIND, WILLY ROY, I HAVEN’T GOT THE RIGHT TO LOVE YOU, THE BOATMAN, ROSE OF OLD KENTUCKY and WALK THROUGH THIS WORLD WITH ME. Duffey’s role in popularizing Bluegrass is still probably not fully appreciated: what other artist (except a Doc Watson) could present songs like WILLY ROY THE CRIPPLED BOY and THEY’RE AT REST TOGETHER to an upscale, sophisticated, urban audience and hold them in the palm of his hand? Duffey’s talent, personality, and influence is discussed intelligently and in some detail in an impressive set of notes by Jon Weisberger. It all makes a fine package that does justice to a great singer & entertainer.
