Richard Bennett is one of those 'chosen few.' Their interpretations seem so close, in fact, that when Tony performed on Richard’s Rebel debut, 'Walking Down The Line,' one had to read the liner notes in order to determine who was playing which break! But what may appear at first blush to be 'imitation,' however, is in fact notable for its many differences. Bennett’s playing is filled with subtle variations that, though reflecting Rice’s influence, clearly demonstrate an evolving and very personal style that has developed from a lifetime of musical experience. With the release of his second solo project, A Long Lonesome Time, Richard puts more emphasis on his hardcore traditional bluegrass roots and showcases more of his top-notch original material, like the cut and Mother Above, which was co-written with his wife and fiddle player Wanda Barnett-Bennett. Richard also throws a couple of bluegrass standards into the mix, performing excellent renditions of Bill Monroe’s Might Dark To Travel and Jimmie Skinner’s classic Doin’ My Time. Rounding out Bennett’s tasteful vocals and stunning guitar work is a stellar cast of supporting musicians, including Bobby Hicks, Jimmy Gaudreau, Rob McCoury, Scott Vestal, Dean Osborne, and Randall Barnes. Richard Bennett is a man of explosive talent, and 'A Long Lonesome Time' has guaranteed him a place among the top instrumentalists and interpretive singers in bluegrass/acoustic music today. Expect to hear his name a lot more often.
