WIZ-0001 JERRY WICENTOWSKI "Lucky Break" I had never heard of Wicentowski, an amateur Bluegrass picker and singer from Wisconsin, but I was very impressed when I heard this lovely disc, and I’d recommend it highly to Bluegrass fans in general. There are a lot of strengths to this album, starting with Wicentowski’s singing: he has a very distinctive voice and uses it beautifully with force & feeling. (It somehow reminds me of the late Joe Val’s singing, though the timbre of his voice is different). He has wisely selected a group of well-known pickers who back him beautifully with a strong, driving sound; Scott Vestal is on banjo, Andy Statman plays a neat, throbbing mandolin, Byron Berline provides superb hard-driving Bluegrass fiddle, and heard on bass for the first time in a while is Wisconsin native Mark Hembree, ex-Bluegrass boy who also was the original bass player for the Nashville Bluegrass Band. In addition, Tim O’Brien is here singing harmony. The third key ingredient here is an outstanding selection of material, a fine mix of standards superbly done and some powerful material that is new to Bluegrass. Tim O’Brien contributes two excellent songs, TEMPEST OF A JEALOUS LOVE and LESS & LESS, and Wicentowski makes himself very much at home with an unusual song from an unusual source: Junior Brown’s VENOM WEARING DENIM. The title song is a good one from the pens of Barry & Holly Tashian, but the real highlights of the collection are two beautifully done songs of Iris Dement, SWEET IS THE MELODY and THEY ALL FADED AWAY. This is a powerful record: anyone who likes soulful, driving traditional Bluegrass should at least get to hear this. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. LITTLE MAGGIE, DREAM OF A MINER’S CHILD, LIVE & LET LIVE, MARY OF THE WILD MOOR
