GARY BREWER 'Jimmy Martin Songs For Dinner'
Type of Product: CD/Tape
Description
Brewer has taken a clever, well-written
song by Tom T. Hall (who also wrote "Bill Monroe For Breakfast") as the basis for this 12-song tribute to the self-styled "King" of Bluegrass. He has even enlisted the stellar help
of Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe and Bobby Hicks on four of the songs, with Art Stamper, Terry Eldredge & Larry
Stephenson on some of the others in what is a generally well produced album, except for the inclusion of drums, which definitely tend to deaden the overall sound. Brewer is an
excellent singer and obviously has a feel for Martin's songs; however—and this is the danger of tribute albums—every song is so closely associated with Martin that the album is
one long reminder that no one else can perform these songs with the sense of style, dynamics and especially the timing that Jimmy imparted to them. In short, it's an awfully tough act to follow. It's still good singing & playing on great songs, but those who have heard the originals may be disappointed.
