Description
Though there have been a number of outstanding young musicians entering the field of Bluegrass music over the past few years, it’s not everyday that a bright, dynamic new talent like Jeremy Stephens practically jumps out and takes hold of you. From Danville, VA, and still in high school, Stephens has absorbed and shows ultimate respect for both Bluegrass and old-time styles of a region that spawned or harbored great musicians from Charlie Poole to Don Reno and Tony Rice. Profoundly influenced by Reno, Stephens demonstrates not only the use of chords and choice of notes of the master, but also echoes the exuberance of a youthful Reno in his prime in such tunes as BANJO SIGNAL, MACK’S HOEDOWN, and the fine JACKNIFIN’. He then moves fluidly into bold, clean, beautifully played clawhammer versions of JOHN BROWN’S DREAM and JUNE APPLE, and throws in a neat version of Ralph Stanley’s HARD TIMES. Switching effortlessly to guitar he joins old time artist Kirk Sutphin on two wonderful parlor guitar duets from the 1920’s work of Roy Harvey & Len Copeland, JUST PICKIN’ and GREASY WAGON, and picks a mean Reno-style guitar on ARKANSAS TRAVELER. The 14-tune tour-de-force also includes DOUBLE BANJO ROLL, DEAR OLD DIXIE, STORMS ARE ON THE OCEAN, and his original title tune. There's some super fiddling here too by Ronnie Stewart, and also helping out nicely are Troy Brammer (guitar) Andy Martin (fiddle) and Darren Moore (bass). A fine collection by a bright new talent.
