Starting with a wonderfully-chosen set of great tunes that lend themselves perfectly to his style, Grier wends his way through 40 minutes of flat-picking that is amazing both in technique and in its musical quality. His choice of notes and subtle timing nuances on tunes like BILL CHEATHEM, ARKANSAS TRAVELER, WHISTLING RUFUS, BLACK MT. RAG and TURKEY IN THE STRAW elevate these pieces to the very highest level of musical artistry. A moody 6 minutes worth of EVENING PRAYER BLUES, his fine original title tune and two versions of SALLY GOODEN add to an already spectacular collection. (There is also a “hidden” 14th track, a cut of LEATHER BREECHES ). Without even the accompaniment of a bass fiddle, this strictly solo album is simply one of the best guitar records we’ve ever heard.
