Oh how many of us would have welcomed this 2-CD set of 48 songs years ago! It is only in the past few years that all of this legendary body of work has become generally available, mostly through the auspices of the Bear Family label of Germany. For those who may not have acquired the Bear Family set, here it is: a gem that includes much of the very best material that the Stanley Brothers ever recorded (and that’s saying a lot). From their first classic session with George Shuffler on bass (SAY WON’T YOU BE MINE, etc), to some classics like A LIFE OF SORROW and NO SCHOOL BUS IN HEAVEN, there’s not a weak track on this wonderful collection. With nice notes by Mary Katherine Aldin (in a 24-page booklet), the set includes such classic Bluegrass songs & tunes as NOBODY’S LOVE IS LIKE MINE, LIFE OF SORROW, ANGEL BAND, HARD TIMES, NO SCHOOL BUS IN HEAVEN, THE FLOOD, HARBOR OF LOVE, ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL, TRAGIC LOVE, LOVING YOU TOO WELL, MEMORIES OF MOTHER and many more. Some of the finest Bluegrass ever recorded, nicely presented, this is a real gem!
