Description

You won’t find out who the members of this band are until you break open this CD: it turns out to be a 3-man aggregation of Brad Murphey (guitar), Rich Zimmerman (mandolin & vocals) and Paul Waitinas (acoustic bass), and the record by the group from out west has been produced by Ben Winship. Definitely influenced by Norman Blake, but slicker and without the raw down-home quality of Blake, the group’s work on a fine set of 12 tunes is outstanding—music with a firm old-time basis but with a highly textured contemporary touch. The trio gets nice assistance on some of the tracks from Norm Pikelny on banjo, Jeremy Garrett on banjo and Rushad on cello. Very nice versions of ROVE RILEY ROVE, WATERBOUND, FLORA THE LILY OF THE WEST, SLOW TRAIN THROUGH GEORGIA and MONROE’S FAREWELL TO LONG HOLLOW.
