Description

Dave Grisman’s Acoustic Disc label has done a number of projects that feature acoustic instruments (especially the mandolin) in bare-bones settings in which the listener can really appreciate the tonal qualities of the instruments used as well as the skills and nuances of the pickers at hand: the label’s “Tone Poets” series is the leading example, but there are other such albums, of which this is the latest. Both Mike Compton and David Long are excellent mandolin pickers, both heavily influenced by Bill Monroe, and here they get to present 17 tunes that show their talents and give a good idea of the variety that can be achieved. They utilize a couple of mandolins, a guitar, mandola and octave mandola, and their sources of material are 4 Monroe tunes, several originals, and some bluesy or raggy tunes from earlier traditions, like VICKSBURG STOMP, PRISON BLUES, SWEET LIZZIE, and THE OLD ARK’S A-MOVIN. The mandolin & octave mandola tracks are especially effective, including BIG INDIAN BLUES and a fine version of Monroe’s ASHLAND BREAKDOWN. Some other neat cuts include VICKSBURG STOMP, CENTIPEDE HOP, HOW YOU WANT IT DONE and STOMP (an octave mandola solo by Compton). There’s an overall bluesy feel to the entire album, a nicely done, very enjoyable record.
