Energetic, nicely recorded contemporary Bluegrass featuring Van Cleve, fiddler with the Mountain Heart band. Van Cleve is a very skilled and talented musician and he shows well here in a well produced album that includes superior backup work from a dozen or so of the finest in Bluegrass: Adam Steffey (mandolin), Clay Jones and Bryan Sutton (guitar), Ron Stewart (banjo), Rob Ickes (dobro) and vocalists Sonya Isaacs, Ronnie Bowman & Steve Gulley among others. The music on this 11-track disc ranges from hard-core traditional to ultra progressive. Some of the modern tunes get a bit tedious (SCARS, GREY AFTERNOON), while others like FALL CREEK FALLS and HIGHLANDS are quite effective. And it’s a treat to hear Van Cleve and some super pickers tackle the standards WHEEL HOSS and TRAIN 45 with no gimmicks—just fine, first class picking. Van Cleve also nicely sings WE CAN’T BE DARLINGS ANYMORE in one of the nicest moments on a good & interesting record.
