BOB BUCKINGHAM & FRIENDS 'My Friend Is A Mule In The Mines'

Description

|
This CD was not available for some time and has just been re-released. There's enough fine old-time picking here to highly recommend this album, despite a few superfluous vocals. Buckingham plays both banjo and fiddle and is joined by the excellent Reed Martin, who also contributes some superb clawhammer banjo work, some of it on fretless or gourd banjo. Todd Clewell, Tim Renner and Bob Hess also contribute guitar, bass and more banjo to a funky but neat record that should be a joy to any old-time banjo fan. In most cases it is not clear who is playing what, and the recording quality in places is definitely of the "home made" variety, but the group really gets going on OLD MOLLY HARE, FORKED DEER, YELLOW ROSE OF TEXAS, SALLY ANN and SOURWOOD MOUNTAIN, with a fine, spirited ensemble sound that takes advantage of the extra low-strung banjo. There are impressive solos on SANDY RIVER BELLE, SOLDIER'S JOY, DARK HOLLER BLUES and MOLE IN THE GROUND, showing the variety of sounds obtainable from different banjos. A very enjoyable album and well recommended to fans of old-time music in general and old-time banjo in particular. RAMBLIN' GAMBLER, LIBERTY, LYING BLUES, UNICORN, LONG STEEL RAIL BLUES, etc.
