Any new Alison Krauss album is of course an event to her many followers—and these include a good many Bluegrass fans. Those who do like her more ‘grassy efforts will most likely be put off by this record if they just play the first track, which is pretty much straight pop, with piano, organ, strings, etc. But we strongly suggest pushing on farther—there are some great cuts: a few new songs and a series of collaborations with other artists that have been available before, but not all in one place. We’re talking about the beautiful MOLLY BAWN (from the Chieftains Down The Old Plank Road CD), HOW’S THE WORLD TREATING YOU (From the Livin’, Lovin, Losin’ Louvin Bros. CD produced by Carl Jackson), DOWN TO THE RIVER TO PRAY (from the O Brother soundtrack), SCARLET TIDE and YOU WILL BE MY AIN TRUE LOVE from Cold Mountain, a nice duet with Brad Paisley on WHISKEY LULLABY, and GET ME THROUGH DECEMBER (with Natalie McMaster). Probably the neatest cut for Bluegrass fans is a very well done rendition of SAWING ON THE STRINGS, an old Reno & Smiley favorite that was actually written for Flatt & Scruggs by Lewis Compton (a Martinsville, Va. DJ known as “The mouth of the South” who was for years the track announcer for NASCAR’s famous Martinsville Speedway). So it’s not really a new project, but there’s plenty to recommend it among the 16 tracks
