MOLLY & JACK TUTTLE 'The Old Apple Tree'

Description

” This is a really nice record by a father & daughter team from California who play a mixture of old-time and Bluegrass songs and tunes. Jack Tuttle, who is a music instructor, plays all the standard Bluegrass instruments and sings harmony or lead, while Molly, his 13-year old daughter, is featured on clawhammer banjo, Bluegrass banjo, and some amazingly good lead guitar for a person her age. She also does much of the singing here, and while her voice has not yet fully matured, it has an endearing quality as she duets with her dad on I WISH YOU KNEW and AIR MAIL SPECIAL and presents very nice versions of STEPSTONE and LITTLE MAGGIE in old time style. Molly also plays an impressive clawhammer banjo, quite effective on her own composition THE OLD APPLE TREE. A string bass—played by guest John Kael—ties things together to create a fuller than expected sound on the Bluegrass cuts. In the notes to the 15 tracks, Mr. Tuttle suggests that “the world will be a better place when more thirteen year olds are influenced by Roscoe Holcomb”—we agree. (As an aside, if you have access to You Tube, check out the video of Molly and her two younger brothers picking the fire out of BEAUMONT RAG!) GRAVEYARD,RAIN & SNOW, KENTUCKY WALTZ, WALKING THE DOG, JUNE APPLE, etc.
