It’s a mystery to us why this old-time group is so secretive about itself—there are no pictures of the 3-member band, no write up, not even an address (the group is most likely from the Pacific Northwest, possibly Vancouver). They have no reason to be so reticent: this is an excellent album of old-time music with a moody, distinctive sound. The key member of the group is one Kori Neil Miyaniski who does most of the lead singing and plays a good banjo, fiddle and guitar. He is joined on most of the vocals by Stephanie Custer who is a fine singer and plays fiddle as well. The third instrumentalist is Shiho Mizumoto who is listed variously as playing fiddle or “low fiddle”. The songs and tunes—attributed to such sources as J. W. Day, Hobart Smith, B. F. Shelton, the Watson Family and Fred Cockerham, among others—are the real thing and get imaginative and respectful treatment in all cases. This is a really good album of old-time music with a somewhat contemporary touch, and one we can recommend highly. CHINQUAPIN PIE, HELL & SCISSORS, ROUSTABOUT, HIRAM HUBBARD, RED ROCKING CHAIR, OMIE WISE, FAREWELL TO OLD BEDFORD, etc.
