It actually exactly duplicates Wiseman’s only Capitol LP “Bluegrass Favorites” (T-1800, later re-issued on Stetson), except that it nicely credits the backing musicians, who up to now were a matter of speculation to many fans & collectors. To the music: it is excellent vintage Wiseman, not too far off his classic Dot recordings except for some percussion and the overuse of echo (which was unfortunately often prevalent on 1960’s records). Helping to explain the sound’s similarity to the earlier Dot cuts is the presence of Joe Drumright on banjo, Benny Williams’ gutsy mandolin, and the twin fiddles of Chubby Wise and Buddy Spicher. Mac sings tenor to himself, and the song selection is excellent—Wiseman is just superb on the classic old-timers like LITTLE BOX OF PINE, TWO MORE YEARS, I’LL REMEMBER YOU LOVE IN MY PRAYERS, WHEN THE SNOWFLAKES FALL and JUST A STRAND FROM A YELLOW CURL.
