Description

|
Back in the mid 1970s Martin Haerle’s CMH label cut some excellent records (LPs) by Wiseman, The Osborne Brothers and Jim & Jesse. The idea was to summarize the best of their earlier work in deluxe 2-LP sets, and to the label’s credit all of these efforts proved quite successful musically. On this fine 1976 recording, Mac Wiseman was joined by the Shenandoah Cutups (Tater Tate on fiddle, Billy Edwards on banjo, and John Palmer on bass—along with Arthur Smith on mandolin) for a combination of a few old Wiseman hits (REMEMBERING, TIS SWEET TO BE REMEMBERED, JIMMIE BROWN THE NEWSBOY, DREAMING OF A LIYTTLE CABIN, SIX MORE MILES, etc., along with twelve old “heart songs” that Mac had not recorded before. As they did on a similar 2 LP series for the Vetco label (now available on Crosscut CDs), the Cutups did a masterful job in providing the type of solid Bluegrass backing that inspired Wiseman and brought out his best. No frills or gimmicks here, just solid traditional versions of such neat songs as BAGGAGE COACH AHEAD, LITTLE BLOSSOM, LITTLE BOX OF PINE, BALLAD OF THE LAWSON FAMILY, GIRL IN THE BLUE VELVET BAND, DARK HOLLOW, etc.
