Sensitively produced by the late Charles Sawtelle, this is a very nicely done, enjoyable album by Ms. Groves, who may be from Michigan (why can’t there be at least a bit of biographical data on a debut album??). Ms. Groves has a sweet, gentle voice and the backing is tailored nicely to let her singing shine: often appropriately sparse, it includes tasteful work by Mark Schatz, Tony Furtado, Tim O’Brien, Laurie Lewis (harmony vocals), Jim Hurst and others, including some nice guitar work by Sawtelle himself. (Drums sure don’t do anything good for two otherwise nice performances). Ms. Graves is brave indeed to feature only her own original songs, and apart from one embarassingly weak track (BAD BOY BLUES) she succeeds, as there’s enough variety and enough quality to pull it off. Nice job on I’LL TAKE YOU IN MY ARMS (an effective duet with Peter Rowan), PEACH PIE (with simple, tasteful old-time banjo backing by Schatz), NEW MEXICO, LITTLE SKY and PONY DAYS. A fine debut album that will appeal to those looking for fresh contemporary Bluegrass sounds.
