But there is a new generation of young artists who are carrying on the old-time tradition, and a few of them are mastering it and adding to the legacy. Bruce Molsky is one of a few at the top of this category and this new CD is a wonderful example of how exciting and rewarding this music can be. On fiddle, banjo and guitar he shows both great technique, spirit and superb feeling for the music. Listen to GREEN GROWS THE LAUREL and DIAMOND JOE and you will hear one of the few vocalist in the old-time field whom you’d really like to hear more of. (His vocals—and the entire album for that matter—are beautifully recorded by Ronnie Freeland.) Molsky gets some lovely assistance from Darol Anger (fiddle), Mike Compton (mandolin) and Paul Brown (banjo) and there’s a fine vocal duet with Dudley Connell as well (CHARMING BETSY). Contributing to the splendid overall quality of the disc is the great selection of material. A wonderful album, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
