Loading... Please wait...I heard my first Carter Family record over radio station WCKY in the mid 1950s when I was 15 years old; it was PICTURE ON THE WALL and it made an indelible impression on me. (I found out much later that it was a special late 1940s "re-issued by request" 78 of one of their rarer Victor recordings of the early 1930s). It was another year or two before I actually secured my first Carter Family 78 (the common, but wonderful coupling of WAVE ON THE SEA and RAMBLIN BOY), and even longer before I learned of the extent of their prolific recording career. Had I seen a box set like this Bear Family gem at that time, I believe I might well have toppled over and expired. The sheer number of superb recordings (well over 300) and the fantastic 220-page hard cover book (not booklet) are overwhelming, as much so as the group's influence on American music. To be as brief as possible, this amazing set (which weighs over 6 pounds) contains all of the Carters Victor, A.R.C., and Decca recordings, plus their 1936 Associated radio transcriptions, as well as recorded interviews with Maybelle & Sara from the 1960s and a few alternate takes. The book, which is priceless, is loaded with wonderful photos & snapshots, besides containing words to every song, a complete discography, notes on all the sessions, and lovely full color pictures of song books, LP covers and all the many labels that their 78s appeared on originally. While this is clearly a major investment for the collector, it will be worth every penny to the serious Carter Family fan. (To put it in a slightly different perspective, an excellent copy of just one of the many rarer original 78s like BUDDIES IN THE SADDLE or I LOVED YOU BETTER THAN YOU KNEW would cost more on the auction market than the price of this magnificent box). The amount of work & care that went into this set is mind-boggling, and its release is truly a major event
