There doesn't seem to be any real theme or direction in this uneven 25-song sampler taken from old 78s recorded between 1924 and 1931. There was a lot of fantastic old-time music on the 765 discs that The Columbia label issued in the music's "golden age", and while this album is pretty representative of its catalog, as much variety could be retained while re-issuing the strongest musical performances. There certainly are some choice cuts here, like 2 tracks by Charlie Parker & Mack Woolbright, 2 by Dock Walsh, 6 pieces by Gid Tanner's Skillet Lickers or related groups, and a neat and rare WALKING GEORGIA ROSE by the obscure Pelican Wildcats. About half the record is devoted to material by artists such as Al Craver, Vernon Dalhart, Obed Pickard, Charles Smith, Deal Family, Dan Hornsby and the Grady Family.
