Although the very finest of Bill Monroe's work for Decca Records can be found in the first of his Bear Family sets (BCD-15423), this 2nd box set has plenty to recommend it. Monroe was still extremely creative in the 1960s, and a long list of sidemen appear on this set including such musicians as Richard Greene, Peter Rowan, Carl Butler, Curtis McPeake, Tony Ellis, Jimmy Elrod, Joe Stuart, Buddy Spicher, Kenny Baker and Byron Berline, among many others. There are notable songs like THE OLD OLD HOUSE, WALLS OF TIME, WITH BODY & SOUL, BLUE NIGHT, TALL PINES and DARK AS THE NIGHT. Equally impressive is the list of instrumentals Monroe came out with in that decade, including the milestone cuts that feature Bill Keith (SANTA CLAUS, SAILOR'S HORNPIPE, DEVIL'S DREAM, SALT CREEK, etc), and Richard Greene (DUSTY MILLER, GREY EAGLE, PADDY ON THE TURNPIKE. Other tracks feature the fiddle of Kenny Baker (METHODIST PREACHER, GOING UP CANEY, CROSSING THE CUMBERLANDS, and Byron Berline on two classic numbers, VIRGINIA DARLIN' and THE GOLD RUSH. There are over 100 songs & tunes on four CDs, and this fine package includes an informative 28 page booklet and a full discography, along with plenty of photos.
