Doyle Lawson's gospel albums must now number in the teens, going back to his first release for Sugar Hill in 1981, the classic ROCK MY SOUL album (SH-3717, $ 13.99). What makes this new issue slightly different is the fact that instead of recently written songs, Lawson here has gone back to some of the classics of early Bluegrass groups, like Reno & Smiley's SOME BEAUTIFUL DAY and LORD'S LAST SUPPER, Carter Stanley's CALLING FROM HEAVEN, Carl Story's SAVIOUR'S LOVE, and Flatt & Scrugg's I'LL BE GOING TO HEAVEN SOMETIME. Other fine performances include WAIT A LITTLE LONGER, WILL THE ANGELS PLAY THEIR HARPS FOR ME and THAT'S ALL HE'S ASKING OF ME. The twin fiddles of Jess Barry and J. W. Stockman enhance some of these fine cuts. It's another superb gospel offering from this wonderful group.
