Traditional Music Classics YAZOO-516-DVD
We are not sure where this wonderful material comes from, but it is taken from good black & white film and has a consistent look that suggests these recordings may have been made for Pete Seeger's RAINBOW QUEST TV show of the early 1960's. In any case we are privileged to see 4 great rural artists, including some very early Doc Watson footage with Clint Howard and Fred Price(Nice versions of Traveling Man, Maggie Walker, Lee Highway Blues, and a powerful Old Daniel Prayed). Several songs show the Kentuckian Roscoe Holcomb on guitar as well as banjo with his distinctive high pitched singing. The rest of the 70 minute tape is devoted to two musicians that we haven't seen before on video, Buell Kazee and Kilby Snow. Both are in excellent form, with Snow's highly impressive work on autoharp being accompied on guitar by Mike Seeger. This is all powerful stuff, filmed in a simple stark setting and a wonderful chance to see some highly influential musicians up close. Great and highly recommended!!
