The St. Louis-based Vigortone label is another of a small group of old-time labels to issue some very fine records in the past few years, and here they have another real winner which should appeal to many. Although everything on this disc is beautifully played, the real features here are the 9 twin fiddle duets by Jones & Ms. Wheeler that range from W.E. Claunch's GRUB SPRINGS to a knockout version of the Cajun HAPPY ONE-STEP that is eerily similar to the classic original by Dennis McGee and Sady Courville. The list of sources for the tunes on this disc reads like a Fiddler's hall of fame: William Stepp, Hiram Stamper, Marcus Martin, W.E. Claunch, as well as some great bands from the early 1930s: The Grinnell Giggers, Leake County Revelers and the Woodie Brothers. To their credit Wheeler & Jones avoid slavish imitation and play these classic tunes with skill and verve. The combination of great tunes and superb musicianship make this CD just about a "must" for old-time fiddle fans. OAK RIDGE STOMP, JOHNNY BUCKER, LAZY KATE, PLOWBOY HOP, JACK OF DIAMONDS, HOGEYED MAN, etc.
