It was a real surprise to see this excellent new old-time album released on the Compass label --a company that specializes in "progressive", experimental and New Age type albums of acoustic music. But we always look forward to anything new by Molsky, who is certainly one of the top proponents of old-time music today, and this album again shows him at his best, with 15 well recorded songs and tunes that he plays, some on fiddle (FORKED DEER, COTTON EYED JOE, LAZY JOHN etc), some on banjo (WANDERING BOY, CIDER, GOL:DEN WILLOW TREE) and some on guitar (BUCK DANCER'S CHOICE, FARE THEE WELL). Molsky is one of the few of today's younger generation of "old-time" musicians who can sing tastefully with feeling and authority. Everything here is of superb quality and the album is highly recommended.
