KRISTEN HARRIS, BEN RIESSER, ASHLEY CARDER, TYSON GRAHAM 'Borger Wiggle' BW-2020-CD

An enjoyable collection of old-time tunes featuring fiddler Harris, who performs with various groups and is a two-time winner of the South Carolina State Fiddling Championship. Accompaniment here includes Ben Riesser on clawhammer banjo, Ashley Carder on guitar, and Tyson Graham on bass. The collection is primarily instrumental, with the lone exception being the Carter Family’s (by way of the New Lost City Ramblers) “Foggy Mountain Top.” South Carolina fiddler Vernon Riddle mentored several of the musicians on this disc, and quite a few of his tunes (including the title tune) are performed here. Riddle was stationed in Texas for a number of years and befriended legendary Lone Star fiddler Eck Robertson. Consequently, several of the tunes have a swing feel to them. The release is attractively packaged with notes (mostly tune sources) of the generous twenty-one tracks. Well-played and thoughtfully assembled. - Gary Reid
