Old Time fiddler Jake Krack helped assemble the tunes for this impressive collection that is drawn from the dozens of old-time and Bluegrass LPs that the famous Folkways label had out in the days of long-playing vinyl albums. There are 38 tracks (76 minutes worth of music) on this single disc, and it's accompanied by a 32 page booklet of notes and photos. There's a nice variety here, with most of the emphasis on old time, although there are some good Bluegrass tracks by Buddy Pendleton, Buddy Griffin (with Red Allen's band), Johnny Warren and David Johnson. Some important old-time artists are represented here, including Eck Robertson, Tommy Jarrell, Clark Kessinger (3 cuts), Wade Ward, John Summers, Arthur Smith, and Fred Price (who plays a very nice LEE HIGHWAY BLUES and RICHMOND BLUES with Doc Watson and Clint Howard's fine backing). There are also several cuts by revivalist musicians Mike Seeger, Tracy Schwartz, Bill Hicks and of interest to most fiddle fans. RECOMMENDED
