Staff Review:

"Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys' Way Out West - 1977 is a recent release from Stanley Family Records made up of live performances recorded during a west coast tour in 1977, and I've been enjoying the heck out of it. The Clinch Mountain Boys' powerhouse lineup features Keith Whitley on guitar and lead vocals, Jack Cooke on bass and vocals, and Curly Ray Cline on fiddle, resulting in a dynamic ensemble sound with exceptional lead and harmony singing. The energy bouncing back and forth between the stage and the audience is tangible on these recordings and as someone that was not fortunate enough to attend one of their live performances, this is a very special and distinctive element of the album. The rare flub or missed note here or there just reminds the listener that these musical giants are still human and at the same time it highlights just how much they absolutely nail it and how little they depend on studio tricks to create their sound. There is a wonderful selection of 19 songs on the album and some of my favorites are Children Go Where I Send Thee, If That's the Way You Feel, Rocky Island, Beautiful Star of Bethlehem, and the classic Man of Constant Sorrow. Fans of the Stanley sound will love this live snapshot of one of the iconic lineups of the Clinch Mountain Boys."
