FRONT RANGE 'The New Frontier'
After two fine releases on their own label, Bristlecone, the Colorado-based FRONT RANGE joined the Sugar Hill label with an excellent, well-produced new disc. They use basically the same formula of combining a few good standards with a good number of originals, though in this case there is nothing quite as strong as "THE ROAD HOME" OR "SO MANY PATHWAYS", songs that were strong enough to carry their respective earlier recordings. Bob Amos' CHAINS OF NIGHT and WITHOUT YOU are excellent and perhaps the best-penned songs on the disc, with Mike Lantz' THE COWBOY also a catchy piece. Along with those, thestrongest cuts are the Stanley Brothers' classic LONESOME NIGHT, and the gospel song BUILDING ON THE ROCK. Another nice job by a good-sounding traditional bluegrass band, one to be reckoned with. HAPPY AFTER ALL, WHEN I STILL NEEDED YOU, SO FAR AWAY, DOWN IN CAROLINE, SHADY RIVER, etc.
