Product Description

The fine country music historian/author Charles Wolfe has updated an earlier, long out of print volume about the early history of WSM's GRAND OLE OPRY into this superb new study that caps many years of extensive research into this amazing American institution based in Nashville, Tennessee. In his direct, easily read & informative style, Wolfe covers the early days of radio in Nashville, the important part played by the National Life Insurance Co., and the various figures-major & minor-who played a part in establishing the prominence of the "Opry". He devotes separate chapters to Dr. Humphrey Bate, Uncle Jimmy Thompson, Uncle Dave Macon, DeFord Bailey, Arthur Smith, and The Delmore Brothers among others, closing with a chapter on Roy Acuff and Bill Monroe. There are some good photos and a complete listing of the 1928 Nashville recording sessions for Victor that resulted in superb releases by such early Tennessee artists as the Crook Brothers, Paul Warmack, Theron Hale, The Binkley Brothers and DeFord Bailey. An excellent, essential study.
