Product Description

WSM: AIR CASTLE OF THE SOUTH by Craig Havighurst, (Univ. Illinois Press, 2007) 280 pp hardbound. There’s an amazing amount of good information and facts here about WSM, the Nashville radio station that has hosted the Grand Ole Opry for over 80 years now. Although there’s plenty of data on the various Opry artists over the years, the main thrust of this work covers the people who founded the station itself and the personalities who ran the station (and the Opry) over the years. Some of the names mentioned extensively here are people like Edwin Craig, Jack DeWitt, George D. Hay, Harry Stone, Jack Stapp, Vito Pellettieri, Jim Denny and Ott Devine. But there are more than a few mentions of artists like Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe, DeFord Bailey, Minnie Pearl, Uncle Dave Macon, the Delmore Brothers and many others. This is not a coffee table book with loads of pictures—(there’s just a modest 14-page section of photos)—but for anyone with a more than passing interest on this fascinating and important part of our musical history, it’s a great read.
