Product Description

MILTON BROWN & THE FOUNDING OF WESTERN SWING by Cary Ginnell (Univ. of Illinois Press, 1994) 336 pp., hardbound. Western swing music expert Ginnell has done a wonderful job in compiling this interesting, easily read biography of one of the two key figures in the relatively short history of classic western swing music (the other of course being Bob Wills). Brown died in a car accident in 1936 at the age of 32, just 4 years after cutting the first recordings of this style of music along with Wills, Sleepy Johnson and his brother Derwood Brown. The book makes generous use of quotes from various musicians of Brown’s bands and family members. Over 100 pages is devoted to extensive notes, a complete discography, a listing of show dates played by Brown in Texas & Oklahoma, and a detailed song analysis of Brown’s recorded repertoire.
