Product Description

"With Fiddle & Well-Rosined Bow" by Joyce Cauthen, Univ. of Alabama Press, 1989, paperback. Though few Alabama old-time musicians made it to the recording studios, there was a full & rich tradition of fiddle music in that satate as author Joyce Cauthen demonstrates in this well-researched, interesting work. County by county she points out the key families, the various local & regional fiddlers conventions, and the outstanding personalities from the 1800s almost to date. Important figures like Y.Z. Hamilton, The Stripling Brothers, Joe Lee and the famous Johnson Family from Sand Mountain get extensive coverage, as do locally prominent fiddlers whose fame did not spread beyond state lines. There are photos, anecdotes, and even a detailed list of various fiddle contest winners(in the appendix). A labor of love that should be of special interest to Alabamians, but will be of interest to fiddle fans in general, too. (A good companion to this book is the excellent LP "POSSUM UP A GUM STUMP", an anthology of old-time Alabama fiddling also edited by the same author. $25.00
