Product Description

This 5-CD boxed set continues right where the classic first box (BCD-15472 1948-1958) left off. Collectors can now have everything Flatt & Scruggs recorded from their first Mercury side in 1948 through 1963, all in 2beautifully presented boxes. Before going further, let's make one thing clear: musically, this set is not the same quality as the first, and for many fans the 1948-1958 box will be all they want or need. That having been said, there's still a lot of good music in this package which is beautifully produced with a wonderful 20 page color illustrated booklet of notes & discography by Neil Rosenberg. There are 140 cuts here, including various singles & songs never issued wa well as the full LPs of FOGGY MT. BANJO, SONGS OF THE CARTER FAMILY, HARD TRAVELIN, SONGS OF GLORY and FOLK SONGS OF OUR LAND. A great feature is the inclusion of the entire 1962 CARNEGIE HALL concert (32 cuts, 19 more that appeared on the issued LP) This set, unaffected by studio over-production, comprised some of the best music here, along with the 1959 gospel sessions and most of Carter Family songs and Scruggs' fine banjo instrumentals. A full LP session backing fiddler GORDON TERRY on square dance tunes would also be of great interest if it were'nt marred by the caller who just about drowns out the music. A good example of how Flatt & Scruggs later siound suffers by comparison to the group in its prime can be heard by contrasting two versions of SHUCKIN THE CORN and IF I SHOULD WANDER BACK TONIGHT: the later(1960)version of the fine instrumental is totally ruined by raucous drums and the lovely lilting version of IF I SHOULD WANDER BACK found in the 1st box with superb singing by Lester & great fiddling by Benny Martin is head & shoulders above the inappropriately jazzed up version here that is further ruined with insipid drumming. The heavy drums are a problem in many of the cuts. But for many this may bring back memories ofd their introduction to Bluegrass music, and those who like the hits like BALLAD OF JED CLAMPETT, PEARL PEARL PEARL, GO HOME etc. plus ofdd singles they never got, this will be a must. And though it may not be of the caliber of their earlier work, there is still some very nice work covered here. ANGEL BAND, GREAT HISTORICAL BUM, POLKA ON A BANJO, JUST AIN'T, WHERE WILL I SHELTER MY SHEEP, HANDSOME MOLLY, McKINLEY'S GONE, NEW YORK TOWN, ELLEN SMITH, MOUNTAIN DEW, MARTHA WHITE THEME, WHAT ABOUT YOU, etc.
