A lot of die-hard Flatt & Scruggs' fans were pretty well turned off the group by the late 1960s when it was waxing such aberrations as DOWN IN THE FLOOD, IT AIN'T ME BABE and CALIFORNIA UPTIGHT BAND; it is easy to forget that in the midst of a lot of mediocrity they still cut some pretty nice songs, and this 3rd and final Flatt & Scruggs box is so nicely packaged that most of their fans will still want to have it even though musically it is a far cry from the gems found on their classic & essential first box BCD-15472. For one thing, this set includes the fine Vanderbilt Univ. concert, as well as the entire Strictly Instrumental LP (with Doc Watson). There are a fair number of other nice cuts here, and with the other two box sets of the group it is now easy (if somewhat expensive) to have the entire recorded repertoire of one of the great, keystone 1st generation Bluegrass groups at your fingertips. Also found here is a full album worth of square dance music of the band accompanying fiddler Gordon Terry (without the calls). The quality booklet includes some lovely, large color and B & W photos, plus the full discography of the groups last 5 years in business. FATHER'S TABLE GRACE, HELLO STRANGER, ROUST-A-BOUT, PICKALONG, THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND, GREEN ACRES, I STILL MISS SOMEONE, MEMPHIS, LAST PUBLIC HANGING, etc.
