This is an absolutely superb collection from the Colorado-based HOT RIZE, certainly one of the 4 or 5 best Bluegrass acts in the business when they were active. Everything about the record is top-notch and tasteful: the singing, playing & arrangements are not gimicky or overly flashly, just thoroughly solid and "right". The album could serve as a perfect model on how to choose material effectively: there are no overworked standards here, yet there are excellent older songs from various traditional sources that so nicely offset & balance the 7 Hot Rize originals. Of the latter, Tim O'Briens title tune and "Late In The Day" are fine, sensitive pieces that really stand out, and Nick Forster's "Don't Make Me Believe" is a superb bluegrass song with a throbbing, classic feel. The group does an excellent job with Dock Boggs' "Country Blues", Keth Whitley's "Youn Don't Have To Move Mountain" and the Delmore's "Life Too Short", but for me the highlights of an all-around exceptional CD are the reworkings of the Carter Family's "Are You Tired of Me My Darling" and a beautiful rendition of Hazel Dickens' "Won't You Come And Sing With Me". Thoroughly recommended. SHADOWS IN MY ROOM, WILD RIDE, JUST LIKE YOU, BLUEGRASS, PART 3.
