There are all sorts of striking, powerful performances here in this wonderful 23-song collection of gospel music taken from old 78rpm records of the 1920s and 30s, from both the white and black traditions. (Volume 1 --YAZOO-2020 --was reviewed previously and is also still available). All the music here is fine, but some of the highlights for old-time fans are the powerful WHAT SHALL OUR ANSWER BE by George Long & His Singers and THERE IS A FOUNTAIN by the Copperhill Male Quartet, the fascinating SHINE ON ME by Cliff Carlisle Quartet, Wade Mainer's great LONELY TOMB, the enthralling HALLELUJAH TO THE LAMB by Ridgel's Fountain Citians, and the utterly charming HE ROSE UNKNOWN by north Georgia's Morris Family, featuring some very spirited young voices. From the black tradition there are gems by artists like Washington Phillips, Blind Willie Davis, Sam Collins, and the Holy Ghost Sanctified Singers. A treasure of great gospel music here.
