I was never fortunate enough to see the Maddox Brothers & Rose in person, but from their records and photos I am fully convinced that they truly deserved their billing as "America’s Most Colorful Hillbilly Band". From the gaudy yet attractive cover of this box to the last of its 96 songs, this set does full justice to this remarkable group whose eccentric, highly infectious "music" provided memorable entertainment for more than one generation of western country music fans. Put aside the fact that this is not the group’s best material (their wonderfully informal 4-STAR recordings of the 1940s fit that category and hopefully will warrant a similar box some day—most are out today on well-done Arhoolie re-issues): even in these later (1952-1958) Columbia recordings there’s plenty to give the listener a good idea of the raucous foolishness that accompanied the wonderful vocals of Rose Maddox. Columbia applied better studio & sound quality than the band had seen earlier, but evidently was never sure exactly what to do with this strange group: they went back and forth between supplying Nashville sidemen for some sessions and just turning the group loose on others. The Maddox’ very limited musicianship must have thoroughly confounded the Columbia people, yet it is the sessions without the Nashville production that yielded the most interesting and memorable cuts. There’s a fair amount of mediocrity here (tracks with organ and/or soupy arrangements that are totally out of place), but there are enough fun cuts that feature Rose’s voice at her best, as well as some lovely gospel cuts that are as powerful as anything on the set. Robert Oermann’s overall notes are right on the money: a superb, succinct, and insightful overview of the group’s entire career. The typically wonderful 28-page Bear Family booklet is graced with numerous huge photos of the band in all its colorful excess (the shot of them lined up with four 1940s’ Cadillacs is a gem). Another wonderful & important set from Germany’s Bear Family label.
