This, the third and probably last album of this short-lived band is in some ways the most enjoyable of the three. A live recording made in 1973 in San Francisco, it captures the 5 members really enjoying themselves in a setting where mistakes, rough edges and a bit of off-key singing are a lot more easily forgiven. The 19-song program contains mostly straight-ahead, hard-core Bluegrass as well as a couple of Peter Rowan’s early compositions, PANAMA RED and MIDNIGHT MOONLIGHT. David Grisman is in good form on mandolin, and Jerry Garcia is surprisingly strong on the banjo. Adding considerably to the proceedings is Vassar Clements on fiddle. Throw in a receptive, appreciative audience and decent recording quality and you have a fascinating souvenir of an exciting and unusual time in the relatively short history of Bluegrass. PIG IN A PEN, ON & ON, THE HOBO SONG, YOU’LL FIND HER NAME, MULESKINNER BLUES, GOIN TO THE RACES, BLUE MULE, HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS.
