OSBORNE BROTHERS AND MAC WISEMAN 'The Essential Bluegrass Album'

OSBORNE BROTHERS AND MAC WISEMAN 'The Essential Bluegrass Album'

The CMH label caught these giants of Bluegrass at a good time when it recorded these 24 pieces in 1979 for a double-LP issue. Wiseman was in top form, and Bob and Sonny Osborne seemed to display a rejuvenated love and respect for the classic early songs & forms of Bluegrass after a prolonged association with the Decca/MCA label—a period in which their music leaned as much to country/western as to Bluegrass. Making this release especially effective and memorable is the choice of material picked out: many of the tracks are old Wiseman classics like ARE YOU COMING BACK TO ME, I’M A STRANGER HERE, SHACKLES AND CHAINS and TIS SWEET TO BE REMEMBERED, but also included are other such songs not previously cut by Wiseman, but at which he excels, like SHENANDOAH WALTZ, TAKE ME BACK TO RENFRO VALLEY, POISON LOVE and OLD BRUSH ARBORS. If there’s a downside here it is the addition of some reverb and use of percussion. Still, an excellent collection.
