NORMAN BLAKE 'While Passing Along This Way'

NORMAN BLAKE 'While Passing Along This Way'

It’s always a great pleasure to receive a new recording by the Blakes, and this new album is as satisfying as any of their many prior recordings. They have the knack of finding lovely melodies and presenting them in a completely unpretentious, natural & thoroughly musical way. Norman’s guitar picking is always a joy to hear as he gets superb tone from his instruments (it doesn’t hurt that he owns some of the best sounding instruments and the recording quality on the disc is top-notch, too). All 14 cuts here are fine pieces, with my favorites being THE GREENWOOD TREE (a lovely fiddle-guitar duet), THE GRAVE OF BONAPARTE, and a new cut of Norman’s classic LAST TRAIN FROM POOR VALLEY. Though the Blakes’ music is unique & thoroughly distinctive and cannot (or should not) be categorized, it is closest to old-time, certainly in spirit. They are heroes, at least to this listener, for doing what they really love and doing it so well. Highly Recommended. OLD STEP-STONE, HANGIN DOG, SWEET HEAVEN, OLD MOTHER FLANAGAN, GOING TO LEAVE OLD DIXIE, GOD’S RADIO PHONE, ON & ON & ON, etc.
