CHESAPEAKE 'Rising Tide'
This was the first of three albums from this Washington, DC based part time band with strong connections to the Seldom Scene. Utilizing a contemporary style that eliminated banjo and featured a slightly more "folky" sound (& material), the group included Mike Auldridge, Moondi Klein & T. Michael Coleman of the Seldom Scene, plus Jimmy Gaudreau. Auldridge's steel guitar (he does play some dobro too) and Coleman's electric bass give the band a more metallic, modern sound, but their singing, picking & arrangements are tasteful & striking and should attract a considerable following. I enjoyed all the tracks except MOONDANCE and COLUMBUS STOCKADE BLUES, which is over-arranged and oversung. Nice work on BLACK JACK DAVEY, HIGH SIERRAS, SUMMER WAGES, SHADY GROVE, MORNING BLUES, DARCY FARROW, 2:10 TRAIN, etc.
