CHESAPEAKE 'Full Sail'
Though not every cut here is an unqualified success, there are enough outstanding performances to make this very rewarding listening for those who don’t mind seeing the boundaries of contemporary Bluegrass stretched a bit. Of the 11 tracks LET IT ROLL and CRAWFISHIN’ are too rock-oriented for this listener, FREE AT HEART too much on the pop side, and the treatment of RAIN & SNOW—a great song—is nothing special. On the other hand the group excels on dynamic yet sensitive versions of ARE YOU TIRED OF ME MY DARLING, LAST TRAIN FROM POOR VALLEY and LAST THING ON MY MIND. HOME FROM THE HILLS, SWEET MELINDA and LIGHTS OF HOME are powerful performances that come right at you and define a distinctive sound for the band on its 2nd album. The group features Mike Auldridge (some dobro, some pedal steel & some lap steel), T. Michael Coleman, Jimmy Gaudreau and Moondi Klein—three of them ex-Seldom Scene members.
