KENNY SMITH 'Studabaker'
It is getting to the point where it seems every sideman and his brother must have a solo album out, but in the case of Lonesome River Band’s Kenny Smith, why not? He is a fine guitarist and has put together a superior album that includes a very well-chosen mix of material, both vocal & instrumental. The title tune is a fine, dynamic instrumental that gets the album started in high fashion, and BILL CHEATHEM, ST. ANNE’S REEL, RED EYED BENNY HEN, SNOW SHOES and ME & MY FARMALL are all solid showcases for Smith’s excellent guitar work. These tunes are nicely set off by some fine vocals including a great LAY ME TO REST, that sounds like typical Lonesome River Band at it’s best (even though the personnel is slightly different). PREACHING BY THE ROADSIDE and LAY THIS BROKEN HEART TO REST (sung by Smith’s wife Amanda) are also solid, first-rate performances. A nice album. ONE HORSE WAGON, 12 cuts.
