Charlie Bailey was an important figure in the early days of Bluegrass, both as a member of the Bailey Brothers (with brother Danny) and later on his own. As a duet the brothers achieved considerable popularity in the Knoxville, Tenn. area and later in Raleigh, N.C. Later, leading his own group and working out of WWVA in Wheeling, West Va. he developed another sizeable fan base in New England and Canada. Unfortunately his few recordings were on obscure, poorly distributed labels and he failed to achieve the recognition that he could have had with better exposure. These recordings, which were made in 1955, are a good example: they were made for a WWVA radio special and the originals are just about impossible to find today. The recordings were makeshift, but are significant in that they include Sonny & Bob Osborne (who were members of Bailey’s Happy Valley Boys for a brief time). They also include a young Buddy Spicher on fiddle, and some accordion playing by Phyllis McCumby. The music is not great, nor is the sound quality, but this re-issue will be of considerable interest to the serious fan and/or student of early Bluegrass.
