JIMMIE SKINNER 'Sings Bluegrass'

JIMMIE SKINNER 'Sings Bluegrass'

  • $13.50

Jimmie Skinner was one of the more distinctive country singers of the post World War II period and though his voice is associated more with the honky-tonk sound of his many fine recordings for the Radio Artist, Capital, Decca & Mercury labels, he still has a prominent association with the Bluegrass genre for at least two reasons. First many of his songs have become Bluegrass standards(DOIN' MY TIME, YOU DON'T KNOW MY MIND, DON'T GIVE YOUR HEART TO A RAMBLER, and second, his record store, the Cincinnati based Jimmie Skinner Music Center, was probably the leading supplier of Bluegrass records in the days of 78s and 45s and had a lot to do with Bluegrass hanging in there when things got tough in the late 50s and 60s. It is not surprising that he made some all Bluegrass albums like this one that originally appeared on his store's own label, Vetco. It's not a bad album, with some good songs, but it's too bad that a little more time & care wasn't taken with it originally. It's definitely of the quickly recorded, makeshift low budget category and the fact there are no notes or indication of who plays what doesn't help this reissue. There's a dobro to be heard which may be played by Rusty York(?). It will still be of interest to fans of one of the most distinctive singers of country music's post war period. IN THE PINES, SHORT LIFE OF TROUBLE, DEAR OLD MOTHER, CHAIN OF BROKEN HEARTS, I'LL RAILROAD NO MORE, LETTER EDGED IN BLACK, A ROLLING STONE, I'M A FREE LITTLE BIRD, DRIFTING & DREAMING, etc.
