CHRIS THILE 'Stealing Second'

At the young age of 16, Thile was already an established name in bluegrass mandolin, and this is a thoroughly professional recording. It starts in great fashion with four excellent cuts including the best of the disc, the lead off AH SPRING. Most of the remaining ten cuts will appeal mostly to fans of more "progressive", jazzier styles, though LEAVES FALL and HOP THE FENCE are nice interruptions, and the album as a whole is growing on me aftewr several listens. It may seem impressive to some that Thile has written all 14 pieces on the project, but I think his better tunes would stand out a lot more if surrounded and set off by some standards or classic pieces that Thile would render is stellar fashion. The weaker cuts like THE GAME IS AFOOT and A NIGHT IS MOS EISLEY seem pointless and directionless and serve to bog down rather than enhance the rest of the album. Top-notch support from Sam Bush, David Grier, Jerry Douglas, Stuart Duncan and others.
