This fine old-time band from Paw Paw, WV has had a number of very nice recordings out over the years, on their own label & later on Flying Fish. This 18-track release is another most enjoyable album, highlighted by the lovely hammer dulcimer/fiddle duets of Sam and Joe Hermann. Those cuts—5 of them—include the wonderful INDIAN NATION, BELL COW, LOST INDIAN, IRINA’S WALTZ & MIDWINTER WALTZ. These range from highly spirited to moody & atmospheric—all are effective. There are also a couple of fiddle & banjo pieces, like HARD ROAD TO TRAVEL and CROW CREEK, and a good full-band rendition of SALLY IN THE GARDEN (Mark Schatz plays bass on this as well as on two other tracks. The remaining 10 cuts are vocals, and while there are no great voices here, the Hermanns, plus Joe Fallon and Paul Kovac, sing with feeling and have picked some nice songs (RANGER’S COMMAND, GOING TO THE WEST, WHERE GRASS WON’T GROW, COAT OF MANY COLORS and AIN’T NO ASH WILL BURN are the most effective). All in all, a very enjoyable CD that we recommend.
